Voluntary suspension. He isn't in distress — that is the part people miss. He hung himself there on purpose, and he's staying until he sees it differently. This is the card of the pause you don't want to take. The situation isn't asking for more effort. It's asking you to stop, hang there, and let the picture rearrange itself.

A pause that's turned into paralysis. Or martyrdom — suffering performed at someone, in the hope they'll notice and change.

Its correspondence

Neptune — dissolving, blurring, the loss of hard edges. Neptune is where certainty goes soft, which is unbearable if you're gripping and freeing if you're not. It's also the planet of self-deception, so it's fair to ask whether you're surrendering or just hiding.

He's not being punished. Nothing is happening to him. That's the part people miss and it changes the whole card.
